How to design the perfect kitchen...for you

Recent studies have shown that the majority of homeowners will only change their kitchen once every 20 or 30 years.

How to design the perfect kitchen...for you

Most remodeling decisions are due to wanting the kitchen you have always dreamed about and you will probably already have a clear idea of how you want your new space to look.  But with so many ways to achieve that look and an abundance of choice of materials and finishes available it can become an overwhelming process. Therefore we have put together our tips for designing your dream kitchen.

Create a moodboard

It's good to collate your ideas on a moodboard. You could use an app such as Houzz or Pinterest to create an online ideasbook to show your kitchen designer. That way they can instantly visualise your style and put forward relevant schemes.

Think - how will I actually use my kitchen?

You may have seen a fabulous kitchen in a magazine but does it actually suit your lifestyle? We are seeing many customers wanting a kitchen that could be described as a 'gourmet' kitchen with extended fridge freezers and plenty of worktop space. If you want to do a lot of entertaining integrated cooking facilities on a central island can ensure you are not isolated from the action. It is important to put together a list of priorities for you and your family so that no-ones needs are overlooked.

What's trending?

Although we don't believe you should follow fashion when it comes to choosing your new kitchen, it is always a good idea to look at the key trends and emerging technology to ensure that your decisions are "futureproof" and that your new kitchen will continue to work for you in years to come. Many kitchen trends have longevity, for example Shaker kitchens are still a popular choice and "an eclectic mix of rustic and contemporary is today's modern" according to The NKBA.

Consult an interior designer

If your kitchen renovation is part of a larger house project then it is always a good idea to enlist the help of an interior designer. As well as being able to put together a cohesive design that flows throughout your whole home, they will have industry contacts that could get you a better deal or be able to source a unique material. They also have a great deal of experience interpreting your ideas to create a brief for a designer.

Don't forget the light

Lighting should be one of the key considerations for your kitchen design and it can be something that is overlooked. With many advances in lighting technology they can be a stunning addition if added correctly, for example, incorporating lighting below an island unit will make it appear to float.  The latest LED products have less heat output, which prevents cupboards becoming too warm and saves energy meaning they can be an economical choice for additional lighting.
